The VALUE of a ScrumMaster, with Hernan Benedetti

Hi everyone,

If you’ve been following the Velocity Partners blog for awhile, you know that I’ve been recording interviews with colleagues for a number of years. These have largely been more introductory in nature, as I try to introduce you to some of my wonderful colleagues.

This session is a bit different. It’s an experiment that, if it goes well and you enjoy it, we may start doing more of. Instead of introduction, it’s more of a discussion around a key agile topic.

The theme this time is the value of full-time ScrumMasters. I can’t tell you how often I hear folks challenge the role of ScrumMaster:

  • All they do is facilitate meetings, how can that be a full-time role?
  • Why can’t team members share the role?
  • Why can’t I as a manager, be the ScrumMaster of my own team?
  • If it is a full-time role, what do they DO?
  • And can they ScrumMaster more than one team?

so I sat down with our Principle Solutions Manager, to discuss these questions. I’ve know Hernan for several years and he’s got “serious chops” when it comes to agile software development. I wanted to get his take on the “value” of a ScrumMaster and why it might be worth investing in.

This talk was inspired by the following post on LinkedIn by Ben Linders:

Ben is clearly struggling with this question, so perhaps we can help him and others understand the VALUE of a ScrumMaster.

Hope you enjoy the chat. Let us know if you “want more” on this or other topics…

Stay agile my friends,

Bob & Hernan
